Why Visit New Zealand in August?
Visiting New Zealand in August is a genuinely excellent choice for travellers who want dramatic scenery, great value, and a completely different side of the country to what the summer crowds experience. August is the heart of the New Zealand winter, and while the days are shorter, around nine to ten hours of usable daylight is more than enough for a full day of exploring. Outside the ski resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka, the country is refreshingly quiet, making it easy to have iconic viewpoints, trails, and attractions largely to yourself.
| What | The Lowdown |
| Crowds | Low. The summer rush is long gone, and ski fields aside, trails, roads, and viewpoints are largely to yourself. |
| Pricing | Shoulder-season deals on flights and accommodation, except in the ski hubs of Queenstown and Wanaka. |
| Snow | Deepest snowpack of the year on South Island ski fields. Queenstown and Wanaka are at their absolute prime. |
| Daylight | Around 9 to 10 hours of usable daylight, enough for a full day of exploring, with long cosy evenings. |
| Wildcard | Winter food festivals, roaring pub fires, and the surreal sight of steam rising from turquoise geothermal pools in the cold. |
Thinking about turning this into a trip? Our 9-Day South Island Self Drive Tour and 5-Day Queenstown Tour Package both line up well with August’s ski season and quieter shoulder-season crowds, or browse the full New Zealand tour packages list to compare everything on offer this month.
New Zealand Weather in August
Understanding the weather and climate is important when planning a trip visiting New Zealand in August. As a Southern Hemisphere country, New Zealand experiences its coldest month in August, with conditions varying significantly between regions. In general, expect four seasons in a single day, particularly in the alpine areas.
North Island: Daytime highs of 13°C to 16°C (55°F to 61°F). Auckland is cool, with a mix of sun and cloud, while Rotorua benefits from geothermal warmth, making it feel noticeably milder than the surrounding areas. Wellington is brisk and breezy, but its compact city centre and excellent indoor attractions make it an excellent August base.
South Island: Highs of 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F). Queenstown and Wanaka sit around 8°C (46°F) by day, falling to freezing at night. Fiordland is frequently foggy and spectacular, with significant rainfall that, in turn, powers the iconic waterfalls of Milford Sound. The West Coast is wetter, but dramatic in a way that is unique to winter.
Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and thermal base layers. The New Zealand sun is still strong in winter, so sunscreen and sunglasses remain essential even in August.
Top Things to Do in August
Visiting New Zealand in August offers a distinctive set of experiences that are simply not available at other times of the year. Here is a breakdown by traveller type.
For the Snow Chaser. August is peak skiing and snowboarding season with the deepest snowpack of the year. Coronet Peak offers night skiing and lake views just 20 minutes from Queenstown. The Remarkables has big runs and terrain parks, Cardrona near Wanaka is relaxed and family-friendly, and Treble Cone is the largest ski field in the South Island with outstanding off-piste terrain. Our adventure tours can be built around the ski season.
For the Thermal Seeker. There is nothing quite like a warm soak when the air is cold. Rotorua’s Polynesian Spa offers mineral-fed hot pools on the shores of Lake Rotorua, while in Queenstown, the Onsen Hot Pools feature cedar bathtubs overlooking the snow-capped Shotover gorge. The Lake Rotoiti Thermal Hot Pools Experience takes you by boat to water-only-access pools on a crystal-clear lake.
For the Wildlife Enthusiast. Winter is exceptional for wildlife watching. Sperm whales are present in Kaikōura year-round, with snow-dusted mountains providing a dramatic August backdrop. On the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, yellow-eyed penguins return to the beach at sunset alongside fur seals and sea lions.
For the Scenic Cruiser. August is one of the most dramatic months to cruise Milford Sound. Winter rainfall multiplies the waterfalls, and mist on the granite walls makes the fiord feel otherworldly. The Milford Sound Coach and Cruise from Queenstown is a full day in a luxury glass-roofed coach. Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers on the West Coast are most stable in winter, making the Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike an ideal August experience.
For a longer voyage through the fiords themselves, the 10-Day Fiordland Expedition Cruise: All the Fiords has a departure on 31 August, sailing an 18-guest yacht through Preservation Inlet, Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound, and Milford Sound, with a scenic helicopter transfer included. Also included is the 7-Day Southern Fiords Cruise Discovery on 25 Aug. Browse the full range of New Zealand cruises for other dates and regions.
For the Stargazer. August’s long, clear nights make it one of the best months for stargazing in New Zealand. Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Country sit within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the world’s finest locations. Tekapo Springs offers hot pools under the stars, combining two of August’s greatest pleasures.
For the Food and Wine Lover. Wellington is at its most vibrant in August during the month-long Wellington on a Plate festival. Warm cellar doors in Central Otago are atmospheric in winter, with open fires and exceptional Pinot Noir. Our wine tours can incorporate both.
Festivals and Events in August
One of the added joys of visiting New Zealand in August is a calendar packed with winter events across both islands.
Wellington on a Plate (1 to 31 August, Wellington): New Zealand’s largest food festival, running the entire month. The signature Burger Wellington competition runs 3 to 23 August, with dozens of restaurants competing alongside masterclasses, degustations, and pop-up dining experiences.
Beervana (21 to 22 August, Wellington): Sixty-plus craft breweries, street food, and live entertainment at Wellington’s Hnry Stadium. A creative celebration of New Zealand’s craft beer scene, and an excellent companion event to Wellington on a Plate.
The North Face Frontier (28 August to 3 September, Queenstown): A week of freeski and snowboard competition and mountain culture at The Remarkables, drawing top athletes and a lively crowd to Queenstown at the tail end of the peak ski season.
Snow Machine (8 to 13 September, Queenstown): Five days of snow and music across eight stages at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, and the Main Arena. Many visitors extend their August trip into early September to ski before the festival begins.
Tauranga Food Show (mid-August, Bay of Plenty): Over 150 exhibitors, cooking demonstrations, and artisan producers. A great addition to a North Island tour.
One event worth knowing about, even though it’s paused: Winter Pride, Queenstown’s long-running LGBTQIA+ winter festival, is on hiatus in 2026 and returns to Queenstown in 2027. If it’s central to your travel plans, hold off on booking around it this year. Check our New Zealand festivals page for confirmed dates on everything above before you book.

How to See New Zealand in August
Visiting New Zealand in August suits all touring styles. For a full comparison, visit our tour category guide.
Self-Drive Tours: A popular choice for August, giving you the freedom to chase snow, hot pools, and stargazing spots at your own pace. Carry snow chains for alpine roads and check conditions daily. See our driving in New Zealand guide before you set off. Motorhome options are also available.
Independent Coach Tours: Scheduled services connect all key winter destinations while your days remain your own. This is a great option for travellers who want flexibility without having to drive on icy roads.
Guided and Escorted Tours: A professional guide handles all logistics, and local knowledge is especially valuable in winter when conditions change quickly. August departures outside the ski hubs have excellent availability.

Pack for all conditions. Bring thermal base layers, a waterproof jacket, warm hat and gloves, sturdy waterproof boots, and sunscreen. The New Zealand winter sun is stronger than most visitors expect.

Is Winter Pride happening in August 2026?
No. Winter Pride, Queenstown’s LGBTQIA+ winter festival, is on hiatus in 2026 and is set to return in 2027. Queenstown still has plenty on offer in August, including the deepest snowpack of the season and The North Face Frontier at The Remarkables in late August.

FAQ
Can you ski in New Zealand in August?
Yes. August is peak ski season with the best snow cover of the year at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona, and Treble Cone.
Is it rainy in New Zealand in August?
Rain is possible, particularly on the West Coast and in Fiordland. However, much of the country sees clear, crisp winter days, and Fiordland’s rain powers its spectacular waterfalls.
Are all attractions open in August?
Most operate year-round. Some high alpine tracks may be closed, but geothermal parks, Māori cultural experiences, boat cruises, glaciers, and glowworm caves all operate normally.
Is August cheaper to visit?
Generally yes. Flights and accommodation outside the ski towns are significantly more affordable than in peak summer, and touring packages represent excellent value.
