North Island Small Group Tour | Hostel Accommodation | 5 Tasty Breakfasts | Hobbiton, Rotorua & Wellington | Tours designed for travelers aged 18 and over
This 12-day North Island small group tour loops out of Auckland and back. It’s built for travelers who want to see the island properly, not rush the highlights. The route runs down the Coromandel coast to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. From there it continues through Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, into Hobbiton and Rotorua’s geothermal country. It carries on to Taupo, Wellington, and the Rangitikei back-country, before finishing through Waitomo’s glowworm caves.
A small group coach and a local driver-guide handle the driving. That means you can watch the scenery instead of the road. Group numbers stay small, keeping the trip social. Most nights use comfortable multi-share hostel dorms. This keeps costs down and suits solo travelers and small groups of friends particularly well. One night includes a traditional Māori village stay near Rotorua. Many travelers rate it as one of the best nights of the trip. You can request a private room upgrade, subject to availability.
This budget small-group tour suits first-time visitors who want to properly cover the island in under two weeks. It also works well for anyone drawn to Māori culture, geothermal landscapes, and film locations along the way. Want something shorter? Our 7 Day North Island Small Group Tour: Auckland Loop covers a tighter version of a similar route. Prefer the Far North and the Bay of Islands to Taupo and Wellington? Our 11 Day Ultimate North Island Small Group Tour heads north instead of south. Weighing this against other travel styles? See our Independent Coach vs. Escorted vs. Small Group Tour comparison.
