This 5 day PurePod New Zealand self drive experience puts you behind the wheel of your own rental car. It takes you into three of the South Island’s most secluded glass-walled cabins. It starts and ends in Christchurch. Each PurePod sits alone on private land, with no neighbors, no crowds, and nothing between you and the view.
The route runs from Banks Peninsula to the Waipara wine valley and on to the Kaikōura coast. A whale watch cruise is built in along the way. The final night swaps isolation for comfort at a boutique hotel in central Christchurch.

PurePod New Zealand: 5 Day Ultimate Self Drive Experience Days
Arrive in Christchurch and collect your rental car. It’s just an hour’s drive to your first PurePod stay at Port Levy, taking in a scenic route around Banks Peninsula past Charteris Bay and Diamond Harbour, then up over the hill above Purau.
The Pōhue PurePod sits just below a stand of macrocarpa trees, with The Monument, a rocky crag on the ridge between Purau and Port Levy, visible behind it. From inside, the views stretch across tussock grasses and rolling hills down to the long, sheltered bay of Port Levy, with no one else around for miles.
After a leisurely morning, drive back through Christchurch and continue an hour north to the Waipara Valley. The Greystone PurePod sits high above the award-winning Greystone vineyard, right in the heart of this wine-producing region.
Set on a spur in a paddock above the winery, the PurePod looks down over the vines and up the valley. Depending on the season, you might spot vineyard workers in the distance managing the foliage wires, picking grapes, or pruning.
Spend the morning taking in Waipara’s scenery before heading to your next stop. The Manakau PurePod sits about 20 minutes inland from Kaikōura, with clear views of the Seaward Kaikōura Mountain Range, including Mt Manakau itself.
The PurePod sits on a spur in a paddock, with kanuka trees for company and birdsong drifting up from the nearby gullies. Facing north, it looks straight at Mt Fyffe, snow-capped for much of the year, and the 2,600-meter Manakau, the tallest peak in the range.
This morning, join a Kaikōura Whale Watch cruise, New Zealand’s only vessel-based whale watching operation, for an up-close encounter with the sperm whale in its natural habitat. Depending on time and conditions, the captain may also look for dusky and Hector’s dolphins or New Zealand fur seals along the coast.
After the cruise, drive back to Christchurch for your final night at the Sudima Hotel Christchurch City. This 5-star boutique hotel sits on Victoria Street, surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and bars, and is a short walk from Hagley Park and the central city.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before checking out. Drop your rental car at the airport before checking in for your flight home.
