7 Day South Island Pioneer Tour for Small Groups

New Zealand’s West Coast and top of the South Island rarely get the spotlight they deserve. This South Island Pioneer tour puts them front and centre over seven unforgettable days. First, you depart Christchurch aboard the legendary TranzAlpine train. Then you cross the Southern Alps before looping through Punakaiki, Abel Tasman, Marlborough and Kaikoura.

Along the way, you will wind through mountain scenery few travellers ever see by road. The TranzAlpine carries you through snow capped peaks and river valleys in comfort. Next, you will explore Punakaiki’s famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Watch the Tasman Sea crash against ancient limestone formations. This 7 day South Island tour also builds in a full free day in Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand’s smallest and sunniest national park. Kayak the coastline, hike the coastal track, or simply relax on golden sand beaches.

Wine lovers will enjoy an included tasting and lunch in the Marlborough region, home to New Zealand’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. The journey finishes in Kaikoura, where seals, dolphins and whales are regular sightings along the coast. Small groups and expert local guides make every stop easy. Because accommodation is premium twin share, every night matches the scenery in comfort.

For more options, explore our tours collection. Or, if you want the classic Fiordland and Milford Sound route instead, browse our South Island New Zealand Tour. Overall, few itineraries combine mountains, coastline and wine country in one week. That is exactly why this South Island Pioneer tour is a favourite for repeat visitors to New Zealand.

7 Day South Island Pioneer Small Group Tour Days

Your tour starts in Christchurch aboard the TranzAlpine, widely considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The train climbs steadily into the Southern Alps, passing snow-capped peaks, dense beech forest, and winding river valleys, before descending into Greymouth on the West Coast.

From here, continue on to Punakaiki, home to the famous Pancake Rocks, a stack of layered limestone formations shaped by millions of years of erosion, where blowholes send spray high into the air during rough seas.

The evening finishes with a Welcome Dinner among your fellow travelers.
