Tongariro Northern Circuit: 2026/27 Great Walk Guide

The Tongariro Northern Circuit takes you around two active volcanoes in the heart of the North Island. First you cross lava fields. Then you climb past Red Crater and look down on the Emerald Lakes. It is also quieter than the famous Alpine Crossing once you leave the crowds behind. This guide explains the route, the 2026/27 changes, the huts and how to book.

Tongariro Northern Circuit 2026/27 Route Changes

Read this before you plan. The 2025 Tongariro fire closed the track between Whakapapa Village and Mangatepopo Hut. DOC says that section will not reopen for the 2026/27 Great Walk season. So the walk now starts at Mangatepopo car park and ends in Whakapapa Village.

DOC is also replacing Oturere Hut, and it says the Great Walk is available for the 2026/27 season. That season starts on 23 October 2026. As a result, DOC now counts the route as 35.5 km from Mangatepopo Hut, down from the old 44.9 km loop. Older guides quote about 43 km, so treat those numbers as out of date. Check DOC’s Tongariro Northern Circuit page for alerts before you travel.

Tongariro Northern Circuit Route, Day by Day

Most walkers take three or four days. However, very fit walkers can finish in two long days, although DOC warns that each day lasts at least eight hours. Here is the four-day plan, which suits most people.

Day 1: Mangatepopo car park to Mangatepopo Hut (1.7 km). The walk takes about 25 minutes, so you arrive early. DOC calls it a good first night for many ages and abilities. You can also stroll to Soda Springs, which is a short detour.

Day 2: Mangatepopo Hut to Oturere Hut (12 km). First you follow the Mangatepopo stream up a valley of old lava flows. Then you climb to the saddle, cross South Crater and climb Red Crater. The Emerald Lakes come next. After that, the track drops steeply into Oturere Valley.

Day 3: Oturere Hut to Waihohonu Hut (8.1 km). However, this section feels quiet and remote. Also, the track crosses stream valleys and open gravel fields along the foot of Ngāuruhoe.

Day 4: Waihohonu Hut to Whakapapa Village (15.4 km). Next, the track climbs gradually to Tama Saddle. Then it passes the Taranaki Falls loop before it reaches the village. Allow about five hours.

If you have only three days, combine days one and two. Walk from the car park to Oturere Hut in one go. That day is long, so start early.

Tongariro Northern Circuit vs Tongariro Alpine Crossing

People often mix these two up. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km one-day walk from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi. However, the circuit is a multi-day Great Walk with huts. The two share the stretch from Mangatepopo Hut to Emerald Lakes.

So you walk the most famous section, but you stay overnight and see more. DOC also says you do not need a separate Alpine Crossing booking if you hold a circuit hut or campsite booking. If you only have one day, try our guided Tongariro Crossing walk instead.

Huts, Campsites and Fees

The circuit has three huts: Mangatepopo, Oturere and Waihohonu. Also, each has campsites nearby. Huts have bunks, mattresses, heating, toilets, basic gas cooking, solar lighting and cold running water. A DOC ranger stays at the huts. However, the huts provide no food, utensils or showers, so carry your own. DOC does not allow camping within 500 metres of the track outside the campsites.

Fees for the 2026/27 season, from 23 October to 30 April, are per person per night:

Option NZ rate International rate
Hut, adult $44 $66
Hut, child (5 to 17) $22 $33
Campsite, adult $19 $28

New Zealand residents must show proof of eligibility. Prices can change, so confirm them with DOC when you book.

How to Book the Tongariro Northern Circuit

You must book huts and campsites all year, not only in summer. DOC opened 2026/27 bookings for this track on 21 May 2026. DOC usually announces booking dates in March, so expect a similar pattern next year.

Parking also needs thought. DOC limits parking at Mangatepopo car park to four hours in the Great Walks season. So park in Whakapapa Village instead and take a shuttle to the start. Overnight parking there needs a free permit from the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre. Buses and trains stop at National Park Village, 15 km from Whakapapa.

Safety, Volcanoes and Respect for the Mountains

Because the track crosses an active volcanic area, eruptions can happen at any time. However, they are unlikely. DOC asks you to read its volcanic risk information before you go.

Other hazards matter more day to day:

  • Loose rocks make Red Crater a slip risk, so take extra time.
  • The descent from the Emerald Lakes to Oturere is steep and covered in sharp stones.
  • The weather can swing from warm to freezing within hours.
  • DOC does not recommend the track for children under ten.

Ngāti Tūwharetoa gifted these peaks to the nation. DOC says climbing Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro is disrespectful and unacceptable to the iwi. So stay on the track and enjoy the mountains from below.

Best Time to Walk the Tongariro Northern Circuit

The Great Walks season runs from late October to April. In addition, from May to late October, DOC says the track needs alpine skills, an ice axe, crampons and avalanche gear. Avalanche terrain includes the Red Crater section. So most visitors should stay with the summer season.

Summer brings the best conditions. However, weather still changes quickly. Our best time to visit New Zealand guide explains seasons across the whole country.

Side Trips Worth Adding

  • Tama Lakes: the lower lake takes about 20 minutes return from the junction. The upper lake takes about 90 minutes return.
  • Taranaki Falls: a popular short loop close to Whakapapa Village.
  • Historic Waihohonu Hut: built in 1903 and 1904, it was the first hut in the park.
  • Ohinepango Springs: an hour return from Waihohonu Hut.
