Why Choose This 8 Day South Island Itinerary

Many South Island trips are mostly driving. This 8 day South Island itinerary puts an adventure in every region, so each day feels different. In just over a week, you can kayak, cycle, raft, zipline and join a glacier trip. The route also mixes short drives with flights and a scenic train, so you spend more time doing and less time driving.

The trip has four themes, shown as icons on the itinerary map:

  • Walking: the Queen Charlotte Track, the Abel Tasman track and the Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. Browse our walking and hiking experiences.
  • Active: sea kayaking, river paddling and cycling on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail and the Arrow River. See our cycling and mountain biking experiences.

Day 1: Marlborough

From alpine peaks to the Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough suits wining, dining, romance or adventure in any season. The Sounds have around 1,500 km of coastline. Explore them by boat, bike, car, helicopter or plane to find intricate waterways, island bird sanctuaries and secluded bays. The revered Queen Charlotte Track also runs through this area.

Outside the Sounds lies some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s best wine country. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is world-famous, so arrange a tour to reach the best cellar doors. Further afield, the Te Hoiere Pelorus River runs between Blenheim and Nelson. Pelorus Eco Adventures runs the Hobbit Kayak Tour there. You can paddle past filming locations and learn about the area’s Māori history. See our Marlborough guide and our Home of Middle-earth experiences.

Days 2 and 3: Nelson Tasman

From Blenheim, drive 123 km (76 miles) to Nelson. It takes about 1 hour 50 minutes. Nelson Tasman is known for long golden beaches, untouched forests and rugged mountains. Walk the sands of Golden Bay, or head inland to Tākaka to see Te Waikoropupū Springs. These are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand. Look but do not touch, because the water is closed to all contact out of respect for its cultural value. Check the Department of Conservation page before you visit. Tākaka is about 104 km northwest of Nelson, so allow a long day.

Next, walk the Abel Tasman track or join a sea kayaking tour around the coast to spy a seal colony. Tour options range from budget to luxe. You can also taste your way around the region by bike on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. Alternatively, head for one of the world-class mountain bike parks. Afterwards, sip wine at a local vineyard and dine on famous Nelson Bay scallops. See our Nelson Tasman guide and our national park tours.

Days 4–6: Christchurch and the West Coast

Day 4: Ōtautahi Christchurch

Fly from Nelson to Christchurch, which takes 55 minutes. Ōtautahi Christchurch is a revitalised city with wide open spaces, modern architecture and heritage buildings. Glide above it on the Christchurch Gondola, which climbs the Port Hills. To head out of town, grab a paddle with Hanmer Springs Rafting. The two-hour rafting and jetboat trip is sure to get your heart racing. If you stay the night, try the quirky Eliza’s Manor or the luxurious, sustainable Pōhue PurePod, which overlooks historic Port Levy Bay. See our Christchurch and Canterbury guide and our Kaikōura and Hanmer Springs guide.

Days 5 and 6: West Coast

Getting to the West Coast is an adventure in itself. The journey crosses Arthur’s Pass and the Southern Alps, and you have three options. First, fly from Christchurch to Hokitika in 45 minutes. Second, drive 246 km (153 miles) to Hokitika, which takes about 3 hours 20 minutes. Third, head for Greymouth by car (241 km, 150 miles, about 3 hours 20 minutes) or by train (about 4 hours 45 minutes). The scenic TranzAlpine train suits travellers who want to relax, take in the scenery and meet fellow passengers. Compare all of the New Zealand train journeys to see how it stacks up.

In Greymouth, take a tour at Monteith’s Brewery. If blackwater rafting and glow-worms appeal, Underworld Adventures, just south of Westport, is the place to go. No West Coast trip is complete without the glaciers. Several operators run hosted trips on Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier, and many tailor them to your physical ability. Afterwards, recharge in a woodfired hot tub at Franz Josef Glacier. For one more thrill, jetboat into the Haast UNESCO World Heritage Area with Waiatoto River Safari. See our West Coast guide and our hot pools and health spas.

Days 7–8: Queenstown and Wānaka

Tāhuna Queenstown

Fly from Hokitika to Queenstown. The trip takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, including a stopover in Christchurch. Tāhuna Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of New Zealand. Race down the world’s steepest tree-to-tree zipline with Ziptrek Ecotours, Queenstown’s first carbon-neutral tourism business. Then catapult through the air on the Nevis Swing, or raft the Kawarau River, home to New Zealand’s longest commercially rafted rapid. You can also cycle trails such as the Arrow River, just 20 minutes away in Arrowtown. See our Queenstown guide.

Wānaka

Wānaka is an hour’s drive from Queenstown. For an authentic, educational off-road adventure, join Ridgeline Wānaka on a 30,000-acre private farm at the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park. Relax at the farm’s exclusive mountain-top “alpine cafe”, then lend a hand with its predator control project. Next, scale a waterfall by via ferrata with Wildwire Wānaka, or see the lake from the air with one of the helicopter companies in the area. To feel the passion of Māori culture and sample local wines, book a tour with WanaHaka. This operator offers a chance to feel the warmth of the tangata whenua (people of the land). See our Wānaka guide, scenic flights and Māori culture experiences.

How to Get Around on This 8 Day South Island Itinerary

This 8 day South Island itinerary is a self-drive trip with short flights built in. The flights cover the longer legs, so you drive only where it adds to the experience. For the West Coast, fly to save time, drive to stop at Arthur’s Pass, or take the train to relax. Because the route includes flights, decide early where to collect and return any rental car. Expert Tips From the Itinerary

  • Cable Bay Adventure Park, Nelson: for more adrenaline, try The Skywire zipline, paintball, archery and mountain biking.
  • Waiatoto River Safari, West Coast: about 85% of the region is conservation land, so this eco jetboat trip through the Haast UNESCO World Heritage Area is a fitting way to see it. It covers ground that would otherwise take days on foot.
  • KJet, Queenstown: for a unique airport transfer, ask KJet. The company takes visitors on a wild ride to their hotel’s private jetty or Queenstown’s main pier, then escorts them to their accommodation.

Tips for Planning Your 8 Day South Island Itinerary

  • Book early: glacier trips, scenic flights, ziplines and rafting are best booked in advance.
  • Allow for weather: flights, glacier trips and jetboat tours can change at short notice.
  • Check requirements: many glacier operators tailor trips to your fitness, and other thrills have limits, so confirm them with each operator.
  • Pick your season: see our guide to the best time to visit New Zealand.
  • Confirm the details: prices, operators and opening times change, so check each provider before you go.
