Days 1–4 of This 10 Day North Island Itinerary: Auckland and Rotorua

Days 1 and 2: Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland
To get your bearings, view the city from the Sky Tower observation deck, 186 metres above street level. The sweeping harbours show why Auckland is called the “City of Sails”. Then try it firsthand with a dinner cruise on the Waitematā Harbour, or have a go at sailing a luxury catamaran.
Next, take the ferry from the city centre to Waiheke Island, a ride of about 40 minutes. Settle in for a wine tasting and long lunch at one of the many vineyards. For something more adventurous, join a Stony Batter tunnel tour. It explores 1.2 km of underground passages built in the 1940s. See our Auckland guide and our boat cruises and water activities. If you are landing in the city, read how to get from Auckland Airport to your hotel.
Days 3 and 4: Rotorua
From Auckland, drive 226 km (140 miles) to Rotorua, which takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Rotorua sits beside its namesake lake and is known as the cultural epicentre of Aotearoa. At Te Puia, immerse yourself in traditional Māori culture. Breathe the steam from dramatic geysers, see bubbling mud pools and watch Māori carvers and weavers at work.
Next, take to the skies with Volcanic Air for an aerial view of Mt Tarawera and the lakes around it. You will also glimpse Waimangu Volcanic Valley, home to the now buried Pink and White Terraces. Back on the ground, a boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana is a must. To end the day, plunge into one of the many geothermal hot springs and spas. See our Rotorua guide, volcanic and geothermal experiences and scenic flights. You can also browse hot pools and health spas.
Days 5–7: Hawke’s Bay and Manawatū

Days 5 and 6: Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay
Rotorua to Napier is 217 km (135 miles) and takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. Welcome to food and wine country, the sunny Hawke’s Bay. Some say the best way to explore a region is through its tastebuds. So arrange a food and wine tour and visit the vineyards and wineries, as there are over 200 to choose from. Golfers can tee off at Cape Kidnappers, built on a ridge-and-valley landscape with sea views that are second to none.
Art and culture fans should explore Ahuriri Napier, also known as New Zealand’s art deco capital. Take a tour in a vintage car or join a guided walk to see how the great earthquake of 1931 shaped Napier and the nearby towns. For a wet-weather option, visit The National Aquarium of New Zealand. Marine life swims overhead in a 1.5 million litre oceanarium, and you can go behind the scenes at the terrapin (turtle) habitat. See our Hawke’s Bay guide, wine tours and heritage and art experiences.
Day 7: Manawatū
Napier to Palmerston North is 185 km (115 miles), which takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Manawatū translates as “heart standing still”, and the lush countryside shows why. It is also a great place to see the farming culture of Aotearoa, so book a tour or guided experience on a working farm.
Then visit Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge, a national taonga (treasure). Walk the tracks to come face to face with the sculpture of Whātonga, an ancient warrior who stands guard over the forest. The official Te Āpiti website lists the current walking tracks. Rugby fans can visit the New Zealand Rugby Museum, which holds the country’s most comprehensive collection of rugby memorabilia. Finish with a quiet night at Makoura Lodge, in the foothills of the Ruahine ranges. The lodge also offers clay bird shooting and archery. See our Whanganui and Manawatū guide.
Days 8–10: Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington

Palmerston North to Wellington is 143 km (88 miles), which takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. Start at Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand. You could spend a whole day wandering its floors. Add a guided Māori tour, such as the daily Mana Māori tour, to experience the living taonga of te iwi taketake (the first peoples of the land).
Next, stroll the grounds of Parliament and visit He Tohu at the National Library of New Zealand. This permanent exhibition displays three founding documents: Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), He Whakaputanga (the 1835 Declaration of Independence) and the 1893 Women’s Suffrage Petition. Entry is free, and you can check visiting details on the National Library website.
After some time indoors, ride the historic Wellington Cable Car up the hill to the top entrance of the Botanic Garden. Pack a picnic and explore its 25 hectares of specialised plant collections and protected native bush. Fans of J. R. R. Tolkien can join a guided tour of Lord of the Rings filming locations. Alternatively, go behind the scenes at the world-famous Wētā Workshop, where the tour uncovers the wonders brought to life by Sir Peter Jackson and his team. See our Wellington and Wairarapa guide, Home of Middle-earth experiences and Lord of the Rings tours.
