Cultural Wonders and Local Cuisine: A 10-Day South Island Road Trip from Christchurch to Dunedin
This 10 day South Island itinerary runs from Christchurch to Dunedin, with a long stop in the mountains and wine country in between. It is a self-drive trip built around manaakitanga, the Māori word for a deep expression of hospitality. You will paddle a waka through a city and sleep under some of the darkest skies on earth. You will also blend your own wine and follow the gold trail through Central Otago. After ten days, you should feel a stronger connection to the land, the culture and the people.

Why Choose This 10 Day South Island Itinerary
Many South Island trips race from one famous view to the next. This 10 day South Island itinerary slows down. It mixes dramatic landscapes with local stories, so you meet the people behind each place. That makes it a rewarding South Island road trip for travellers who want more than photographs.
The route has four themes, shown as icons on the route map:
- Landscapes: lakes, high country plains, gorges and coast.
- Cycling: a wine trail and a historic rail trail.
- Stargazing: dark skies at Lake Tekapo, Twizel and Dunedin.
- Food and wine: cellar doors, regional cuisine and a tramcar restaurant.
Four highlights stand out. You can paddle a waka through Christchurch’s city centre, enjoy a “5 billion star” stay and become a winemaker for a day. You can also follow the gold trail in Central Otago.
Who This 10 Day South Island Itinerary Suits
This trip suits travellers who like a mix of culture, food and the outdoors. If you enjoy art galleries and live theatre, you will find them in Christchurch and Dunedin. If you love wine, Queenstown and Central Otago are among the best places to taste it. If you like to be active, there are cycle trails, a hot lap at a motorsport park and walks through native bush.
It also suits people who want a clear plan without a rigid schedule. Each stop gets two or three days, apart from one busy day in Central Otago. The longest drive is about three hours and fifteen minutes, so you will spend more time out of the car than in it. As a one-way Christchurch to Dunedin road trip, it also avoids doubling back, so check that your rental car company allows a one-way drop-off.

Day by Day: Your 10 Day South Island Itinerary

Days 1 and 2: Ōtautahi Christchurch and Akaroa. Christchurch is the gateway to Canterbury, and it blends urban renewal and innovation with heritage, culture and adventure. Visit Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, where the building is a work of art. Or catch a live show at one of the theatres. For a new view of the city, book a waka paddling tour on the Ōtākaro Avon River. You will learn the early stories of Canterbury’s Ngāi Tahu iwi while you paddle. For dinner, try the Christchurch Tramway Restaurant, where you see the central city from a tram while you eat. See our Christchurch & Canterbury guide and heritage and art experiences.
During your two days, drive about an hour and a half to Akaroa, a coastal town with a French influence. Take a harbour cruise to look for fur seals, dolphins and penguins. For a closer encounter, join Pohatu Penguins, which visits the largest colony of kororā (little penguins) on mainland New Zealand. See wildlife and beaches.
Days 3 and 4: Mackenzie Country. The Mackenzie Country, in the heart of Te Waipounamu (the South Island), is a region of wonder. It is home to New Zealand’s largest dark sky reserve, its highest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook, and its largest glacier, the Haupapa Tasman Glacier. Take a scenic flight over some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery. If you want more adventure, choose a guided heli-hike. Some operators give exclusive access to private land on a family-owned high country farm, and others add champagne picnics and high-altitude gin tastings. See scenic flights.
Lake Tekapo is famous for the Church of the Good Shepherd on the lakefront. It is also home to Tekapo Springs, with hot pools, a day spa and a seasonal ice skating rink. For a night to remember, drive to Twizel and book a SkyScape glass eco-dome. Read more about Tekapo in Tourism New Zealand’s guide to hot pools. This luxury, all-season stay offers a “5 billion star” experience in comfort and solitude. It is the best Lake Tekapo stargazing option on the route, and it needs little effort. See our Mt Cook & Mackenzie guide and hot pools and health spas.
Days 5 to 7: Tāhuna Queenstown and surrounds. Queenstown sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, against the imposing Southern Alps. The scenery is awe-inspiring in any season, so a scenic cruise is a must. You can choose a vintage steamship or a luxury vessel, and sip a glass of local wine as you explore historic landmarks and remote coves.
This is also the world’s southernmost wine region, with excellent cellar doors in Queenstown, Wānaka and the surrounding towns. Book one of the Queenstown wine tours, spend a day as a winemaker, or take to the trails by bike, perhaps with some electric help. The Gibbston River Wine Trail runs along the Kawarau Gorge, and cycling is one of the nicest ways to meet the local pinot noir. Bike tour operators can collect you if your legs get tired. See food and wine, our wine tours and cycling.
For the ultimate indulgence, book a treatment at The Spa at Millbrook in Arrowtown. The Millbrook Resort is known around the world for its luxury stay and golf. See our Queenstown guide and Wanaka guide.
Day 8: Cromwell, Clyde and Alexandra. Start at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, a world-class facility. Take a hot lap with a professional race car driver, or race a go-kart. If you would rather stay out of the driver’s seat, visit the museum, which displays some of the rarest cars in New Zealand motorsport history.
Twenty minutes down the road, Clyde marks the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail, which follows an old railway line through big-sky country. It passes many charming towns, and companies offer bike hire and tours from budget options to all-inclusive packages with chefs, luxury stays and luggage portage. Five minutes south-east, Alexandra has strong roots in the gold era. Follow the gold miners’ trails into the hills, then enjoy the town’s orchards and award-winning vineyards. In winter, you can even ice skate on Manorburn Dam. See active and adventure experiences.
Days 9 and 10: Ōtepoti Dunedin. Dunedin is known for its Gothic architecture and unique wildlife. Visit Orokonui Ecosanctuary to see some of the world’s rarest forest birds, reptiles and plants. Blue Penguins Pukekura offers a behind-the-scenes regenerative tour, with stories of the site’s importance to Māori. An observation deck lets you watch kororā scurry up the beach to their burrows. In the city, there are walking, cycling, craft beer and gin tours. Visit Olveston Historic Home, built in the early 1900s, and ask about a private dining experience among its original décor. Some tours can be arranged in French, German, Japanese or Mandarin for groups. See our Dunedin & Otago guide.
How Each Leg of This South Island Road Trip Works

This is a Christchurch to Dunedin road trip, so you will drive every leg. The notes below explain what to expect on each one.
Christchurch to Akaroa. This is an easy drive of about an hour and a half, and the town is a short trip over the hill. The harbour cruises look for fur seals, dolphins and penguins, and the Pohatu Penguins tour is the way to meet the largest mainland colony of kororā. You can return to Christchurch for the night, or stay in Akaroa if you want a slower pace.
Christchurch to Lake Tekapo. The drive covers 226 km (140 miles) and takes about 3 hours. You enter the Mackenzie Country, so the scenery opens into high country plains. Plan a stop or two, because the Church of the Good Shepherd and the lakefront at Lake Tekapo are among the most photographed places in the country. Leave time for Tekapo Springs, and keep your evening free for the stars.
Lake Tekapo to Queenstown. This is the longest leg, at 256 km (159 miles) and about 3 hours 15 minutes. Leave early so you arrive in time for a lake cruise or an evening in town. Because you stay three nights, you can spread the wine, cycling and spa experiences over three days instead of cramming them into one.
Queenstown to Cromwell. Only 59 km (36 miles) and about 50 minutes, so you have plenty of time for the motorsport park. Clyde is 20 minutes from Cromwell, and Alexandra is five more minutes. This makes day eight a gentle one, even with three towns. Book your hot lap or go-kart session first, then decide how far to ride on the Otago Central Rail Trail.
Alexandra to Dunedin. The final drive is 190 km (118 miles) in about 2 hours 30 minutes. If you plan to cycle part of the Otago Central Rail Trail instead of driving the whole way, ask the operator about luggage transfers and pick-ups. Once you arrive in Dunedin, you can explore on foot, by bike or on a guided craft beer or gin tour. Save an evening for the stars.
Allow extra time on mountain roads and in bad weather, and fill your fuel tank before the long legs. For a similar style of trip, compare our self-drive tours and our South Island tours.
Expert Tips From the Itinerary
The itinerary suggests three experiences that bring the culture and the night sky to life.
- Āmiki Tours, Christchurch: these tours epitomise manaakitanga, with a local’s view of Ōtautahi. They combine Māori storytelling, history and city sights with kai (food) and whanaungatanga (connection).
- Pure Glenorchy: head into Middle-earth and explore Lord of the Rings filming locations, with access to privately owned high country farms.
- Southern Skies Stargazing, Dunedin: a premium tour about the celestial features of the southern sky. It also shares stories and waiata (songs) about how early Māori viewed the night sky.
Stargazing on Your 10 Day South Island Itinerary

The night sky is a thread that runs through the whole trip. The Mackenzie Country is home to New Zealand’s largest dark sky reserve, so Lake Tekapo stargazing is a highlight of days three and four. A SkyScape glass eco-dome in Twizel turns the view into a private “5 billion star” experience.
The stars return at the end of the trip. In Dunedin, the Southern Skies Star Gazing tour explains the unique features of the southern sky. It also shares waiata (songs) and stories about how early Māori viewed it. Two very different nights, in two very different places, tie the journey together.
Food, Wine and Māori Culture Along the Way
This trip is built around local flavours and stories. You eat on a tram in Christchurch and join one of the Queenstown wine tours. You sample pinot noir in Gibbston and walk among orchards and vineyards in Alexandra. Māori culture appears at every stage. You paddle a waka with a guide who tells Ngāi Tahu stories. Hear the Māori significance of the penguin site in Dunedin. Also learn how early Māori read the stars. Browse our Māori culture activities to add more.
