3 Week New Zealand Itinerary: Culture, Food & Wild Places
This 3 week New Zealand itinerary takes you from Auckland to Stewart Island in 23 days, so it runs just over three weeks. You fly between some regions and drive through others. Along the way you will meet Māori culture, taste regional food and wine, and walk through gardens, forests and galleries. It is a journey for people who like their bucket list served with art, history and a good meal.

Why Choose This 3 Week New Zealand Itinerary
Most trips cover the same famous sights. A 3 week New Zealand itinerary can easily become a checklist, so this one adds surprising pockets of art, architecture and heritage. You will see coastal views and rare birdlife, and you will have time for performing arts, museums and galleries as well. It is a New Zealand self-drive itinerary with flights where they save time, so you spend more days exploring and fewer on the road.
The trip has four themes, which also appear on the route map:
- Walking: forest trails, coastal walkways and mountain hikes.
- Gardens: a national arboretum and Gardens of National Significance.
- Culture: Māori carvings, museums, street art and galleries.
- Food and wine: boutique wineries, artisan producers and seafood.
Five highlights stand out: “forest therapy” on Waiheke Island, a visit to a Garden of National Significance, a walk among the tree tops, a cruise on Milford Sound, and stargazing at the southern end of the country.
Who This 3 Week New Zealand Itinerary Suits
This trip is built for travellers who want more than scenery.
- For travellers who enjoy arts, museums and galleries, you will find something in almost every stop.
- If you love food and wine, you will taste your way from Waiheke Island to Central Otago.
- If you like walking, there are forest trails, coastal paths and a sacred mountain to climb.
Photographers will enjoy the Ulva Island Photography Tour on Stewart Island, and nature lovers can look for rare birdlife along the way. The pace of this 3 week New Zealand itinerary is steady. Most regions get two or three days, so you have time to enjoy each place without rushing.

North Island Stops on Your 3 Week New Zealand Itinerary (Days 1–10)

Days 1 and 2: Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Auckland is a multicultural city of food, music and art, where sparkling water meets lush landscapes. Visit the Auckland Museum and book a guided Gallery Highlights tour to hear stories of New Zealand and its place in the Pacific. You can also join Fine Art Tours NZ for a guided food or arts tour behind the scenes with artisan producers. Collection from your inner-city hotel or cruise port is included. Then take the 40-minute ferry to Waiheke Island for a gourmet food and wine tour with Ananda Tours, or a wellbeing workshop such as “forest therapy” with Terra & Tide. Read more in our Auckland guide and explore museums.
Days 3 and 4: Tairāwhiti Gisborne. Fly from Auckland in just over an hour to the land of early sunrises. Walk Wainui Beach at dawn, then visit the Eastwoodhill National Arboretum, which covers more than 130 hectares of unique and native trees. If you are fit, hike the sacred Maunga Hikurangi with a guide. About two thirds of the way up stand nine whakairo, or carvings, that depict Māui and his whānau (family). Finish the day at Matawhero Wines, known for its chardonnay and platters. For a special stay, try The Blackhouse above Wainui Beach, on a 1,000-acre working farm. See our Gisborne & Eastland guide and the official Tairāwhiti Gisborne site.
Days 5 to 7: Wellington & Wairarapa. Wellington is the “coolest little capital”, with craft beer and strong coffee. Explore the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, then visit Kāpiti Island Nature Reserve, a refuge for native wildlife, on a guided walk that focuses on either natural or cultural history. The next day, join Kaewa Tours for a full-day trip over the Remutaka Hill to Wairarapa. You will meet artisan food producers, taste wines and drive to Cape Palliser or Castlepoint, where you may spot fur seals. Start with our Wellington & Wairarapa guide or the official Wairarapa page.

Walk or cycle the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway to see Len Lye’s Wind Wand, the Mothers & Daughters stone and the Te Rewa Rewa bridge. Visit Tūpare Garden and its Tudor-style homestead, and row across the lake at Pukekura Park, a Garden of National Significance. Art lovers should not miss the Govett-Brewster/Len Lye Centre, where a private tour with a gallery expert is recommended. For a boutique stay, book King and Queen Hotel Suites across the road. See our Taranaki guide and our heritage and art experiences.
South Island Stops on Your 3 Week New Zealand Itinerary (Days 11–23)

Days 11 and 12: Ōtautahi Christchurch. Christchurch is a colourful city of laneway hospitality and artisan producers. Take a street art tour to see hundreds of vibrant artworks, ride an electric shuttle through the Botanic Gardens or visit the International Antarctic Centre. Then cross the hill to Akaroa, a French-inspired town, and cruise the harbour with Pipi Journeys. This is one of the most memorable Māori culture experiences on the trip, because it introduces manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship). See our Christchurch & Canterbury guide.
Days 13 and 14: West Coast. Board the TranzAlpine, a scenic train between Christchurch and Greymouth. The journey covers 223 km in just under five hours. The Scenic Plus class serves meals made with ingredients from the paddocks you pass. You can read more on the TranzAlpine page or the Scenic Plus experience. From Greymouth, visit the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and blowholes and walk among rainforest giants on the West Coast Tree Top Walk. Continue south to Hokitika, known for the blue water of its gorge and for galleries that specialise in pounamu (greenstone). Then see Franz Josef or Fox Glacier by helicopter or on a heli-hike. See our West Coast guide.
Days 15 to 17: Fiordland. Rudyard Kipling called Milford Sound the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, and it is breathtaking in any weather. When it rains, the waterfalls multiply. From Franz Josef you can take a scenic flight to Milford Sound, then cruise Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound or Lake Te Anau. Some operators offer overnight stays on board. Rental cars are available in Te Anau, or you can fly on to Queenstown if the budget allows. See our Fiordland guide and scenic flights.
Days 18 to 20: Queenstown & Central Otago. This is wine country. Mt Rosa Wines, Carrick Winery, Cloudy Bay and Amisfield are local favourites. At Kinross in the Gibbston Valley, the “Winemaker for the Day” experience lets you blend your own pinot noir. Cruise Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw with RealNZ, then tour Walter Peak, a high country farm, where you can feed sheep, deer and alpacas and meet Scottish Highland cows. See our Queenstown guide.
Days 21 to 23: Murihiku Southland and Stewart Island. Southland is on the edge of the country, with varied landscapes and dramatic wildlife. Reach Rakiura Stewart Island in an hour by ferry or 20 minutes by air. Join the Ulva Island Photography Tour, or go on an evening wild kiwi encounter with a guided walk in Mamaku Point Conservation Reserve. On the mainland, visit Transport World in Invercargill to hear the story of speed bike racer Burt Munro. For a night off the grid, book a Hananui or Tokoeka PurePod, where the dark skies are made for stargazing. See our Southland guide, Stewart Island guide and the official Stewart Island page.

How to Travel This New Zealand Self-Drive Itinerary
The route mixes domestic flights with a self-drive. That keeps the long legs short and saves the car for scenic stretches. The table above gives the times, and the notes below explain how each leg works.
Starting in Auckland. You begin in the north. The Fine Art Tours NZ experience includes collection from your inner-city hotel or cruise port. Waiheke Island is a 40-minute ferry ride from central Auckland, so keep a full day free for the food and wine tour.
Auckland to Gisborne. Fly, which takes 1 hour 5 minutes. Once you land, you will want a car, because Wainui Beach and Eastwoodhill are about half an hour apart, and Maunga Hikurangi is two hours from Gisborne. Plan the mountain as a day of its own.
Gisborne to Wellington. Fly again, this time for 1 hour 15 minutes. Wellington’s main sights are close together in the city. Kāpiti Island is a trip north of the city with a licensed tour operator, and the Wairarapa is a guided full-day tour with Kaewa Tours, so you can enjoy the wine without watching the road.
Wellington to Taranaki. You have a choice. Flying takes 1 hour. Driving covers 353 km (219 miles) in about 4 hours 30 minutes. Fly if you want more time in New Plymouth. Drive if you would rather see the countryside on the way.
Taranaki to Christchurch. Fly across Cook Strait to the South Island in 1 hour 30 minutes. Christchurch is easy to explore, with a street art tour and an electric shuttle through the Botanic Gardens. Akaroa is a short trip over the hill.
Christchurch to the West Coast. This leg has three options, and the TranzAlpine is the scenic choice. The train covers 223 km in just under five hours, and the Scenic Plus class includes a meal. You can also fly to Hokitika in 45 minutes, or drive to Greymouth, 241 km (150 miles) in about 3 hours 20 minutes. The Greymouth i-SITE advises booking early for the summer season from November to March.
Franz Josef to Milford Sound. Take a scenic flight over the Southern Alps to Milford Sound. Flight times vary, so check them with your operator. Once you are in Fiordland, you can cruise the water or stay overnight on board.
Fiordland to Queenstown. Drive 287 km (178 miles) in about 3 hours 45 minutes. Rental cars are available in Te Anau. If the budget allows, you can fly to Queenstown instead. Either way, treat this as a travel day.
Queenstown to Southland and Stewart Island. Drive 188 km (117 miles) to Invercargill in about 2 hours 25 minutes. For Stewart Island, take the ferry, which takes an hour, or fly, which takes 20 minutes. Allow time for an evening kiwi walk and a night under the stars.
Check the drive times in the table, and allow extra time on mountain roads and in bad weather. Each region also works as a stand-alone stop, so you can shorten this New Zealand self-drive itinerary by dropping one. For a similar style of trip, compare our self-drive tours and our North & South Island tours.
Expert Tips From the Itinerary
Your 3 week New Zealand itinerary suggests three special places to stay along the way. Each suits a different stop, so you can book one or all three.
- The Blackhouse, Gisborne: a luxurious stay above Wainui Beach with ocean views, set on a 1,000-acre working farm.
- King and Queen Hotel Suites, New Plymouth: the city’s leading boutique hotel, just across the road from the Len Lye Centre.
- PurePod, Stewart Island: a Hananui or Tokoeka PurePod sits in an eco-sanctuary with no light pollution, and kiwi have been spotted roaming around the property at night.
Tips for Planning Your 3 Week New Zealand Itinerary
These tips will help you get the most from a 3 week New Zealand itinerary that mixes flights, drives and guided days.
- Book guided experiences early: the Maunga Hikurangi hike, Kāpiti Island, wine blending, wildlife tours and PurePods all need advance booking.
- Use a guide on Hikurangi: the hike is demanding, and a guide helps you get the most out of it.
- Plan for weather: the South Island can change quickly, especially around Fiordland and the West Coast.
- Confirm the details: timetables, operators, prices and opening times change, so check each provider before you go.
Make Your 3 Week New Zealand Itinerary Your Own
Every day of this 3 week New Zealand itinerary can be adjusted. If you have less time, drop a region, because each one works on its own. If you have more, add a day where you want to linger, such as the Wairarapa, Fiordland or Stewart Island. Where the table offers both a flight and a drive, you can swap one for the other. Our team can shape the route around your dates, interests and budget. Share your plans through our custom New Zealand tour form.
