Experience Conservation at the Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter
The Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter offers a rare look at New Zealand’s national icon. First, visitors enjoy an exclusive tour of a working kiwi nursery and hatchery. Although the main Rainbow Springs Nature Park is permanently closed, this specialized facility remains open. We dedicate our work to saving this unique bird through active conservation.
How We Save the Kiwi
Our team works hard to ensure the survival of every chick. To start the process, field workers bring eggs to us from the wild. Consequently, this protects the eggs from predators during their most vulnerable stage. Once the eggs arrive, our experts take over the care process immediately.
What You Will See
During the tour, you follow the full journey of a kiwi chick. Specifically, you will see three main stages of development:
- Incubation: We monitor the eggs in a controlled environment.
- Hatching: You might see a chick break through its shell.
- Raising: We house the young birds in a safe nursery.
The chicks stay with us until they reach a safe weight. Therefore, a larger bird can protect itself from predators in the forest. Once they are strong enough, we release them back into the wild.
Why Your Visit Matters
Every visitor helps us continue this vital work. In addition, you get to see the real effort behind New Zealand’s conservation goals. As a result, you will leave with a deep understanding of what it takes to protect these birds.
The Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter is a must-see for anyone who loves wildlife. Join us to see how we turn rescued eggs into thriving wild kiwis. In conclusion, your support keeps the mission alive.
Important Notice: Please be aware that while the specialized Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter continues its vital work and remains open for tours, the main Rainbow Springs Nature Park is permanently closed.
