Explore the Icy South: International Antarctic Centre New Zealand
If you are looking for an immersive escape into the wild, the International Antarctic Centre New Zealand is an absolute must-visit. Located right next to Christchurch International Airport, this world-leading attraction brings the mystery of the frozen continent to life. Because it sits so close to the terminal, it is the perfect first stop for visitors arriving on the South Island. Whether you want to face a polar blizzard or meet rescued wildlife, the center offers a deep connection to the spirit of exploration.
Interactive Galleries and Global Discovery
To begin with, your journey starts in the expansive Gallery area. We designed these spaces to provide a hands-on experience for visitors of all ages. Specifically, you can touch most of the exhibits while learning about the following:
- The Antarctic Treaty: Discover the unique international partnership that protects the continent for peace and science.
- Human Survival: See how researchers live and work in the world’s most extreme environment.
- Global Climate: Understand how Antarctica’s massive ice sheets affect the entire globe.
Furthermore, you can step into the “Storm Dome” to experience an authentic Antarctic blizzard. During this event, the temperature drops to -8°C (17°F), while the wind chill makes it feel like -18°C. Fortunately, we provide warm jackets and overshoes so you can enjoy the chill in comfort.
The New Zealand Penguin Encounter
In addition to the galleries, the center houses a world-class conservation program. Because Little Blue penguins are nocturnal and shy, they are notoriously difficult to see in the wild. However, our facility features the country’s first combined indoor and outdoor viewing area. Currently, we care for up to 26 rescued penguins that cannot return to the wild. You can watch these charismatic birds swim and play in an 80,000-liter pool. Since there are two different viewing levels, you can even observe their underwater acrobatics.
Ride the Amazing Hagglund
For those seeking adventure, the Hagglund ride is the ultimate highlight. This is a genuine, all-terrain amphibious vehicle exactly like those used by scientists on the ice pack today. Notably, this is the only ride of its type in the world. As you buckle up, you will traverse a course designed to simulate the rough terrain of the frozen south. Because your general admission includes the ride, you can experience the thrills and bumps as many times as you like!
A Cinematic Finale
To conclude your expedition, you should immerse yourself in the 17-minute cinematic show, “Beyond the Frozen Sunset.” Filmed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Mike Single, this masterpiece follows a seasonal arc from sunset to sunrise. Using stunning aerial footage, the show provides a moving experience that makes you feel as though you have truly visited the continent.
Ultimately, the International Antarctic Centre New Zealand is a family-friendly, all-weather destination that inspires everyone to become an advocate for the ice. Therefore, you should certainly reserve your tickets in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on this legendary Christchurch experience.
