Your Ultimate North Island Tour: A Full Loop from Auckland

New Zealand’s North Island rewards travellers who give it real time to explore. This Ultimate North Island tour takes you through the very best of it over eleven unforgettable days. First, you depart Auckland and head into the ancient kauri forests of the Far North. Then you loop south through the Bay of Islands, Mount Maunganui, Rotorua, Taupo and Waitomo, before returning to where you started.

Along the way, you will stand beneath Tane Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in New Zealand. Cool off at the crystal-clear Kai Iwi Lakes en route. Next, you will spend a free day exploring the Bay of Islands, including an included Waitangi Treaty Grounds pass and a traditional Hāngī dinner. This 11 day North Island New Zealand tour also takes you inside the real Hobbiton Movie Set, through Rotorua’s bubbling Wai-O-Tapu geothermal wonderland, and beneath the glowworms of the Waitomo Caves.

Wine lovers will enjoy a tasting at Marsden Wineries in Northland along the way. Small groups and expert local guides make every stop effortless, and premium twin share accommodation ensures comfort throughout. Your guide handles all optional activity bookings on the road, so there is nothing to arrange in advance.

11 Day Ultimate North Island Small Group Tour Days

We leave Auckland behind and head north, easing into the journey with a few scenic stops along the way.
Our first stop is the Kauri Museum in Matakohe, where you’ll discover the history of New Zealand’s giant kauri trees and the stories of the early settlers who worked among them.
After a lunch break in Dargaville, we cool off at the breathtaking Kai Iwi Lakes-crystal-clear freshwater framed by native forest. From here, we continue into the legendary Waipoua Forest, home to Tāne Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in New Zealand. Depending on timing, your Waipoua experience will take place either today or tomorrow.
We end the day on the west coast in Omapere, checking into our beachfront accommodation. This evening, enjoy a relaxed fish‑and‑chips dinner (included) as the sun sets over the Tasman Sea.
