Kauaeranga Kauri Trail: The Complete Hiking Guide
Kauaeranga Kauri Trail: One of the North Island’s Best Hikes
Tucked into the rugged heart of Coromandel Forest Park, the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail is one of the most popular and rewarding hikes on New Zealand’s North Island. Better known as the Pinnacles Walk Coromandel, this track combines ancient kauri forest, a fascinating gold- and logging-history, dramatic summit ladders, and sweeping 360-degree views that stretch across both coastlines of the peninsula.
Furthermore, the trailhead sits just 30 minutes from Thames and roughly two hours from Auckland, making it an ideal escape for city-based adventurers and visitors exploring the region. Whether you tackle it as a day walk or an overnight adventure, the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail delivers an experience that stands comfortably among the best in the country.

Track Overview
The Pinnacles Walk Coromandel follows a historic packhorse route that kauri loggers and gold miners carved through the Kauaeranga Valley in the early 1900s. As a result, the track carries a rich pioneering heritage alongside its natural beauty. Wide stone steps cut into the rock by packhorses and workmen still form sections of the route today, adding a tangible sense of history to every stride.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kauaeranga Road End to Pinnacles Hut (7 km, 3 to 4 hours). The journey starts at the Kauaeranga Valley road end, where the track crosses a swing bridge and follows Webb Creek through lush subtropical rainforest. After joining the historic packhorse route, the trail climbs steadily through stands of tawa and ancient kauri trees. Although the ascent is consistent, the gradient remains manageable for most walkers. The route then follows the ridgeline with spectacular east coast views before arriving at Pinnacles Hut, one of the best-equipped DOC huts in New Zealand.
Summit Climb: Pinnacles Hut to the Summit (40 min return) From the hut, a short but thrilling climb leads to the very top of the Pinnacles via a series of iron ladders bolted into the rock. In particular, the final ladder section adds a sense of genuine adventure to the ascent. At the summit, walkers enjoy uninterrupted 360-degree views across the Coromandel ranges, the Bay of Plenty, the Hauraki Gulf, and the Hauraki Plains. Sunrise from the top is, without question, one of the most memorable experiences in all of Coromandel hiking New Zealand.
Day 2: Return via Billygoat Track (alternative loop) Rather than retracing your steps, most overnight walkers return via the Billygoat Track. This alternative route descends through a different section of the Kauaeranga Valley track, offering fresh scenery on the way back to the road end.
Pinnacles Hut
The Pinnacles hut New Zealand is legendary among trampers for its size and facilities. Unlike most backcountry huts, it accommodates up to 80 people across multiple bunk rooms, and it features a full kitchen, a common area, and well-maintained toilet facilities. Consequently, it suits walkers of all experience levels, including those new to overnight hiking.
DOC manages bookings for the hut, and advance reservations are strongly advised, especially during summer weekends and school holidays. Campsites are also available adjacent to the hut for those who prefer to sleep outdoors.
Getting There

The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail starts at the Kauaeranga Valley road end, located approximately 15 km from Thames township via Kauaeranga Valley Road. Most of the road is sealed, though the final section is gravel. Since there is no public transport to the trailhead, walkers need their own vehicle or a shuttle from Thames.

Best Time to Visit
The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail is open year-round. However, summer (December to February) offers the warmest conditions and the longest days, making it the most popular season. In contrast, spring brings the highest rainfall, which can cause stream crossings to flood and make the access road slippery. Autumn is an excellent alternative, as the settled weather and reduced crowds create ideal hiking conditions.

Historical Significance
One of the most distinctive features of Coromandel Forest Park walks in this valley is the layered history beneath your feet. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, workers spent months at a time living and working deep in this forest, felling kauri and prospecting for gold. Teams of packhorses carried supplies up the same route walkers follow today. As a result, the wide, flat stone steps carved into the rock remain a visible and striking reminder of that era.
Practical Tips
- Book the hut early. Summer weekends fill fast. DOC bookings open well in advance, so reserve your bunk as soon as your dates are set.
- Start early. An early start not only beats the crowds but also gives you the best chance of a clear summit.
- Bring layers. Conditions on the ridgeline change quickly, so pack a waterproof jacket even on sunny days.
- Wear sturdy footwear. The summit ladders and some sections of the descent require solid grip on your boots.
- Carry sufficient water. There are stream crossings along the route, though always filter or treat any water before drinking.
