Join us on this unforgettable South Island cycle tour. It connects three of New Zealand’s best Great Rides into one epic journey. It’s the ultimate way to experience the full diversity of the South Island’s west coast and top of the south, on two wheels.
This South Island cycle tour links the West Coast Wilderness Trail, the Kawatiri Coastal Trail and the Great Taste Trail across more than 335km of riding. Each trail showcases a different side of Aotearoa. Expect ancient native forest and glacial rivers, windswept coastline, and sunlit vineyards. All trails are rated easy to moderate, so riders of all levels can take part. You can ride the loop in either direction. Start in Nelson and head south, or begin on the West Coast and finish in sunny Nelson. If you’d prefer to focus on just the final leg, our 5‑Day Abel Tasman National Park Cycle Tour covers the Great Taste Trail section in full.
Three Trails, One Unforgettable Journey
The West Coast Wilderness Trail winds through ancient native forest, alongside glacial rivers and past historic gold mining sites. It immerses you in the region’s raw natural beauty. From Hokitika, the trail passes through quiet rural communities and offers sweeping views of the Southern Alps. Detours along the way include the West Coast Treetop Walkway and a scenic river cruise. There’s also a guided walk through the turquoise waters of Hokitika Gorge.
The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is the newest addition to New Zealand’s Great Rides network. This family-friendly 40km route runs from Westport to Charleston, taking in lush wetlands, towering native forest and rugged coastline. Along the way, historic Māori pathways and gold mining sites tell the story of the region’s heritage. Keen-eyed riders might spot Kiwi, Weka, seals or penguins. A stop at Punakaiki lets you explore the famous Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point. From there, the shuttle carries you on toward Nelson.
The Great Taste Trail closes out the journey, winding through the vibrant coastal region near Abel Tasman National Park. Ride through fertile farmland, along golden beaches and past sparkling waters with views of Tasman Bay. Along the way, explore the charming towns of Mapua and Motueka, known for their local produce and world-renowned wineries. Nelson’s lively arts and crafts scene rounds out the adventure. An optional side trip into Abel Tasman National Park for kayaking or a scenic boat ride caps things off.
Easy Logistics, Fully Tailored to You
Getting to the trail is straightforward wherever you begin. From Christchurch, take the scenic TranzAlpine train to Greymouth, or fly direct to Hokitika. You can also self-drive and leave your vehicle safely in Greymouth. Nelson offers direct flights from all major cities. Kiwi Journeys’ shuttle services connect both regions, so you can focus on the ride, not the logistics.
Every package is fully tailored to your preferences, including accommodation style, timing and optional extras. NZ Tourism Tours takes care of bike hire, shuttles, luggage transfers and ongoing trail support throughout. It’s all backed by more than 12 years of experience building cycling holidays across the South Island.
