Your Far North Escape Tour: Kauri Forests to the Bay of Islands
New Zealand’s Far North holds some of the country’s most important history, all packed into a short and manageable trip. This Far North Escape tour takes you through the very best of it in just four days. First, you depart Auckland and head into the ancient kauri forests of Northland. Then you explore the Bay of Islands, one of the most historically significant regions in the country, before returning south.
Along the way, you will stand beneath Tane Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in New Zealand, estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Next, you will cool off at the crystal-clear Kai Iwi Lakes, a trio of freshwater dune lakes surrounded by native forest. This 4 day New Zealand tour also includes a wine tasting at Marsden Wineries and a full free day in the Bay of Islands, with the included Waitangi Treaty Grounds Combo Pass granting access to the site where New Zealand’s founding document was signed in 1840.
The journey builds to a traditional Hāngī dinner at Waitangi, a Māori feast cooked in an underground earth oven, paired with a cultural performance. Small groups and expert local guides make every stop effortless, and premium twin share accommodation ensures comfort throughout.

Few short breaks pack in this much culture and scenery, which is exactly why this Far North Escape tour is a favorite for travelers short on time.

4 Day Far North Escape Small Group Tour Days
We leave Auckland behind and head north into New Zealand’s Far North, a region shaped by ancient forests and a history stretching back to the earliest Maori settlements. Along the way, we stop at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe, where exhibits tell the story of the country’s giant kauri trees and the pioneers who once logged them.
After a lunch stop in Dargaville, we cool off at the crystal-clear Kai Iwi Lakes, a trio of freshwater dune lakes surrounded by native forest. Later, we venture into the legendary Waipoua Forest, home to Tane Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in New Zealand, estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Depending on timing, your Waipoua experience takes place either today or tomorrow.
We finish the day on the west coast in Omapere, checking into beachfront accommodation. Tonight, enjoy a relaxed fish and chips dinner as the sun sets over the Tasman Sea.
This morning is all about flexibility. If Waipoua Forest was not visited the day before, you’ll explore it today, either en route or via a complimentary local shuttle.
We then cross the Far North toward the east coast, stopping at a winery after lunch for a relaxed wine tasting, before arriving in Paihia later in the afternoon. After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day and evening are completely free, whether that means unwinding by the waterfront or exploring this vibrant Bay of Islands town at your own pace.
A full free day to design entirely as you choose. Spend it exactly how you like, whether that’s a scenic cruise through the Bay of Islands, a dolphin-spotting excursion, kayaking to secluded beaches, or a relaxed day by the water with great food and ocean views.
Your included Waitangi Treaty Grounds Combo Pass allows you to explore the historic grounds at your own pace, including the site where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Your guide is on hand throughout the day to help arrange optional activities or share local tips.
In the evening, the group comes together for an included Hāngī dinner at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, a traditional Māori feast slow-cooked in an underground earth oven, paired with a cultural performance.
We journey south today with a few unforgettable stops along the way. Our final highlight is a stop in the charming Matakana Village. Enjoy free time to relax over lunch, browse the boutique shops and local galleries, or sample the region’s renowned wines at The Vintry, which offers tastings from a selection of local vineyards.
It’s the perfect laid-back way to wrap up your Northland adventure before returning to Auckland in the late afternoon.
