Chatham Island Tourist Information


Chatham Islands are a group of ten Islands and are a part of New Zealand. They are around 700 Km away from the inhabited land, separated by sea. In population and area, they are among the smaller countries of New Zealand. The great importance of the islands is the Rock Lobster, Paua Industry and the rich bird life which is a blessing of the land. In olden times, they were isolated from the rest of the world, which is now eliminated with the help of regular air service to the land.

The land has a rich collection of tourist attractive spots which makes Chatham islands a lovely vacation destination. The land has historic buildings, reserves, museums and Caves which are not seen anywhere else in the world. The Basalt columns, the Moriori caves with Dendroglyphs tree and Petro glyphs rocks along with the Seal colony are some of the favorite tourist spots which you cannot miss out during your tour to Chatham Islands. You will love a visit to the place as you get chance to collect the fossilized teeth of sharks and to go on fishing trips in the island. You can even go for a scuba diving or hunting or enjoy your trip in scenic flights. Hunting is popular in the islands and you can hunt wild sheep, wekas or pigs.

Tourists have to note that public transport facilities are not available in Chatham Islands. You will get take away meals from various destinations like Petre Bay Takeaways in Waitangi. You can get first class accommodation facilities in various lodges situated approximately 12 miles away from Waitangi. There are various other motels and hotels in Chatham with good accommodation and other entertainment including local pub. The cheapest accommodation is available in various hotels like Roo's Roost. You can go for hotels facing the sea. The climate of the land is subjected to frequent changes with moderate rainfall.
